What is Henna?

A bit of useful information before you start applying henna!

HOW IS IT MADE?

Henna is a small shrub called Lawsonia inermis, and is found in Iran, India, Pakistan, Egypt and North Africa. The young leaves and twigs are ground into fine powder, then mixed with water and natural oils and applied on the hands, feet and hair to give them a reddish-orange color. The henna mud mixture can be applied in beautiful patterns through a small plastic cone with a small hole pricked into one corner.

Sometimes, chemicals are added to the henna to create a darker stain – however I try to use 100% natural henna – and will tell you before using it whether it has chemicals or not!

HOW LONG DOES IT LAST FOR?

Henna is a temporary stain and only lasts for 2-3 weeks. The depth of the colour depends on the length of time you leave it on your skin. It also depends on what part of the body you get the tattoo on – palms are generally the hottest part of your body therefore stain the darkest! The longer you leave it, the richer and deeper the colour! You can now have tattoos whenever and where ever you want them – and most importantly you can change them EVERY Week so you’ll never get bored with the same design!

WHO CAN USE IT?

Henna is for everyone! It is a great project to do with your friends and a fun activity to have at parties and events!

WHAT COLOUR IS HENNA?

Henna is NOT black! ‘Black henna’ has dangerous dyes or chemicals added that could cause permanent scarring or internal damage. All natural henna is a deep red- dark brown in colour, and orange-y when it’s fading!

IS IT PAINFUL TO USE IT?

The entire process of applying and using henna is not painful at all and is a great way to unleash your creative side! It’s like painting with a very fine and smooth paintbrush on your body!
